Cupping

Cupping is a Chinese form of physical medicine in which suction cups (glass or silicone) are used to gently pull soft tissue up to reduce tightness of the muscle, improve circulation and to move 'stagnant energy.' Different sized cups are used depending on the area such as a forearm or large section of the back.

Cupping at our office is used with a silicone accordion-like cup that is placed over the skin using coconut oil. Inflammation, metabolic waste, stagnant energy is lifted and pulled up to be removed from the affected location. This allows the soft tissue to relax and promote healing.

The cups may be placed in one location for short periods of time or may be moved along the muscle planes. The patient may be at rest or be asked to move for an active participation in reducing muscle tightness. Cupping works well to relieve muscle tension and provide deep relaxation of muscles that may not respond to massage. If often relieves trigger points or reduces them.

Cupping is frequently paired with Gua Sha and may also be paired with acupuncture for maximum benefit.

Cupping may benefit:

  • Tight restricted muscles
  • Trigger points
  • Assist with upper respiratory infections

  • And many more applications!
